Zoda,

Nothing needs to go on the end or top of a coil to send out sparks!  If 
you want long sparks, a toroidal shaped electrode is usually the best way 
to achieve this.  The top terminal size and shape plus the power input 
and resonator inductance determines the spark output of most Tesla 
coil systems.  There is really no way for most beginners to grasp the 
real meaning of all this until they actually leap in make a number of 
mistakes and get a true feel for the system.
