I would suggest getting a copy of Duane Bylund's book - "Modern Tesla Coil
Theory" available from the Tesla Book Company (1-800-398-2056 in CA and
other Tesla related sources). It has some neat experiments and ways to 
instrument your coil using simple equipment, along with practical 
nuts-and-bolts explanations of some of the underpinnings of Tesla coils
(resonance, transmission line theory, gaps and quenching, etc...).
