Al,
Trichel did basically this in the 1930s. I have done the experiment a
couple of years ago and more recently in August 1996. You can take a
Tesla secondary and to the base hook a spark gap to the spark gap hook
the hot lead of a DC HV supply. Ground the other lead of the supply.
The result is a noiseless system where the tiny spark gap subtely breaks
down and the coil rings up against the isotropic capacitve load of the
terminal capacity. (note* put a needle point off into space on the
toroid)
The receiver can be a large 12" ball hooked to a simple O'scope and you
will see a DC only signal with a ring wave on the negative going ramp.
I plan on returning to this work in the near future.
