Richard (and all):
Use a series spark gap with three or more individual gaps or a series
type
quenched gap (composed of metal discs separated by a ceramic or phenolic
washer). These types of gaps possess quenching characteristics equal to
or
better than many rotary gaps. All things being equal, construction and
materials play a key role (obviously).
The series quenched gaps were commonly used in old radio transmitters
after
the turn of the century and up to the advent of the transmitting triode
in
the late teens and early 1920's. Lots of good info in older radio
engineering texts on this. Hope this helps!
