Hi Danny,
Here's the basics of my 6" coil now running.
sec. form...6.31"od acrylic tube 1/8" wall by 24" length.
wound 22.5" ~1020 turns close wound w/ 24ga magnet wire.
capped/sealed both ends w/ 1/4" lexan disks and
two coats behr build 50 (2 part epoxy paint) the grd tab
(1" x 1 1/2") copper plate epoxied below bot turn
and soldered.
toroid....(6.3"od x 25.5" ring od) alum flex duct on inverted pizza
pan all covered with 2" alum. tape. bot. of toroid is about
1 1/2 " above last turn on sec.
pri coil...pancake spiral 1/4" copper tubing w/ 1/4" air spaces id is
9" x 24 3/4"od. mounted w/ 8 grooved 1/4" lexan supports under
a slabe of 1/4" lexan 27" x 32". 16 turns tapped at 13 1/4.
spark gap...10 copper tubes (7/8" x 5" long) 9 gaps .033" ea.for
a total gap of .297" mounted horiz. in top of a rectangular
box quenched by a 12,000 rpm 8 amp univ. vacuum motor,
from (amer. science & surplus $12.50) speed controlled w/ 9
amp 0-140v variac.
power...4 nst's 15000v/30 ma for total of 15000v/120ma for now
protection...minimal just two safty gaps one across the caps. and one
across the neon transformer bank with center grounded to case.
each output of nst bank has a choke (70+ turns 14ga thhn wire on
a 1" x 8" pvc tube) then a series resistor (2500 ohms -at- 50w).
tank caps...2 in parallel (FCI .01uf -at- 100,000 v) from Fair Radio Sales
$95.00 ea. for a total of .02uf.
tank circuit.. inner connected with 1/4" copper tubing. all rf grounding
is 2.5" wide alum flashing. pri tap is #4ga. fine stranded welding
cable w/lrg clip.
controls...dual ganged 22amp 0-240v variacs for 44amps -at- 280v (running -at-
140v max.) one 9amp/0-140v variac for vac. gap one panel mount volt
meter 0-300vac. 2 emi filters ( 60amp 115/480v) 1 on input 1 on
output. 60 amp contactor and various start/stop control switches,
fuses ect.
sparks...avg. 50" with some strikes measured at 60". as is. I may drive
it with my 14,400v 5kva pole pig in the near future.
let me know if you want any more info.
safe coiling,
