Hi Greg,
If you were surprized by what the DMM told you, wait until
you look at the primary current on a scope (using sense resistor,
isolation etc.). The highly distorted waveform gives peaks *well* in
excess of the RMS value. Variacs are guaranteed not to like MOTs.
