Reinhard,

The square law just states that it will take 4 times the power to
double the spark length.  For my coils:

      Spark Length = 1.7* SQRT watts (5% accuracy)  works OK
for my coils. 

My spark lengths are maximum occasional spark lengths to a ground.
John C's spark lengths are max continous arcs to ground; a 
continuous arc channel is maintained, the spark streamer locks
to ground and stays indefinitely.  Also, John C's spark lengths are
based on coil surveys of many coils.
