Large power transformers (more that 50 watts) are generally rated for power
based on heat buildup while the transformer runs at full load CONTINUOUSLY.
You could probably run a pole pig xfmr at 5 times its specified power
rating for a nominal TESLA run. The time constant of a large power
transformer of the "pole pig" type may very well be in the 1 hour range.
Anyone that uses one of these monsters could probably tell you that the
transformers do not even think about getting warm for any Tesla Coil
activity. The police would probably come by before the transformer got too
warm. Go ahead, push it to (or beyond) it's limits.
