Voltage Multiplication Circuits

I have a question about the capacitors in a Cockcroft-Walton
style voltage multiplier circuit. Does the voltage rating need to exceed to
total device emf from end to end, or just the difference between the input
and output of each respective stage?  I assume whatever is true for the
caps, is true for the
rectifiers also (?).
