One thing that disturbed me about your description was something that
sounded like the arcs were being allowed to strike the primary coil, or a
connection to it. ?? that would be a very poor design, dangerous and
likely to fail.

For the functioning of the oscillator, they are essentially
interchangeable. ost coilers choose to place the SG accross the
transformer terminals to help aid in preventing HV kickbacks from killing
the tranformer. It will arc through the same gap before it hurts the
trannie.
The drawing in the N&V article has these

If you mean puuting the gap in parallel with the transformer, it
shouldn't change performance any, but I would recommend it for a little
added saftey assured on the life of your.... ....is it an NST?
