Garry,
Yes, if the NST is too close to primary, it will absorb power from
the field. About 10" or more may help things. I think Gary Lau
did some work that suggested 14" away was better in his coil.
(It may have been even further, I forget). I've run my NST's close
to the secondary at times, and yes, it may have hurt the output.
