Use a variac -- it's a lot cheaper than replacing your transformer or
capacitor. When the system is initially out of tune the reflected waves
into the xmfr and cap could overvolt them severly and produce lasting
damage.
You can probably borrow one or take your coil to any local electronics
school/university/trade school/tv repair shop where small 10 amp variacs are
found on almost every bench. Then if you can't afford to buy one you won't
have to spend any money.
Do it right -- use the variac -- save heartaches and headaches later.
