What kind of SG do you have? Static? Air blown? IMHO it could be that the
ionized air stays there, makes the gap break down at lower voltage, and
break down more often. You could try setting a fan or hair dryer to blast
it, and see what happens. 
It doesn't sound like the MMC died - if one cap fails and burns through,
it remains dead, and doesn't revive.

Oh, btw, what type of mains switch do you use - i.e. is it
solid state, a relay, a switch, with variac etc? And how much amps does
the TC draw when performance drops? And how about your NST, have you tried
running it as a jacobs ladder or sustain an arc to check if it is ok?
