I found a 12" sphere at the local Orchard Supply Hardware.. no vent hole in
this one, but the weight is remarkably light, and there is a polished seam.
The thing is pretty smooth.. not that I'd want to use it in a precision
optical system, but impressive, none the less, for the cost (except that OSH
won't sell them by themselves... you have to buy the orb support too..)
I wonder if they have a quantity discount.... I'll call on Monday and find
out. For those list'ites who are into Van deGraaff generators and the like,
these are really nice, and actually available retail over the counter
(except at my local OSH...). The various big box stores probably have them
(Home Depot, Kmart, etc.)
Same manufacturer..
