Matt; I am with you on this one. Ihave used SCR's in CD ignitions with good
results. The fact that 555are now giving up suggests no isolation between
the timer and the MOSFET or the power circuit. a simple 7812 regulator
should help and an opto isolator between. The use of a SCR requires some way
to disconect power from the output so the SCR will turn off. I use a choke
in series with the DC supply or 1/2 wave dc to disconect.
