John,

I took apart an old defibrillator (probably from the 60s or 70s) a few years
ago. It had a large (512 joule) cap, some nice high voltage diodes, and a
transformer. The transformer could be useful for a small coil. Mine didn't
have any specs on it, but the arc was very similar to that of a 10kV 23mA
oil burner ignition transformer. As for the cap and diodes, they are
useless in a Tesla coil (way too much capacitance) but great fun otherwise.
I couldn't get mine to crush cans, as someone else mentioned, but I probably
was doing something wrong. If you do decide to play with the cap, be
EXTREMELY careful. You get no second chances. Defibrillators can stop
hearts as easily as they start them.

Hans
