Ed,

I agree.  Both work together, the series rotary, and the not-so-
tight overall coupling.  My guess is that a typical rotary would
quench on the 2nd or 3rd notch for your system.  You could
do a test by shorting across most of the series gaps, so that
only 2 or 4 are active, and see which notch it quenches at.
