coupling fix

Hello, 
To fix my coupling problem, I am going to cut out the table my secondary coil
attatches to, and put a plate underneath the table. 
Like this:

My question is, What is the highest up on the secondary that my primary will
ever have to be?

Current setup:
6" sec.
2" spacing between pri. & sec.

Hopefully, this will bring up my spark legnths closer to the 40's....
