Unless you're using a jet engine to power the sucker gap, the noise
generated by the gap should be small compared to the noise generated by the
streamers.  Enclosing the gap won't help.

Tesla coils ARE noisy.  You can't have lightening without thunder.  If you
have neighbors in close proximity, your options are to run the coil indoors
or in the early evening.  It's not unreasonable to become agitated by late
night fireworks or other loud noises.

Hi everybody, 

           I'm building a single static sucker gap as seen at

hp?x=spark_gaps.jsp. However I have a bit of a problem. I have a couple of
neighbors that are very problematic as far as the noise is concerned. They've
been known to call the police on things as small as fireworks and have already
become agitated about me about running this thing late at night. I have a
feeling that this gap isn't going to help. I was wondering if there is anything
I can do to muffle the noise of this thing. Has anyone done anything like this?
Ive considered putting a pipe over the actual gap, putting the thing inside a
styrofoam box with holes punched in it to let air flow through, etc. If you
have any ideas let me know.
