Dan,
I have had similar experience with small sparks jumping from my hand to a
filing cabinet when I was running my (currently dismantled) ignition-coil
powered TC.

The sensation actually comes from charge (capacitively coupled from the
topload to by the human body via the air) discharging to a grounded object.

Any ungrounded conductor that is within the area affected by the electric
field of a running TC will become charged to some extent, and current can be
drawn from it to ground.

My experience suggests that if  even you ground everything you possibly can,
sparks will still jump from your fingers to the grounded metalwork IF you
are standing in the electric field -courtesy of the effect described above.
