Hi to all,
I have been playing around with tube coils for a while, and trying for
longer sparks. My secondary is 3.5"x13" and primary of 6" and producing 28"
sparks. I wound a 4.25"x17" secondary and am using a 6" primary. The
coupling is much closer and have noticed that with this setup I can achieve
the same spark length, but with less power input and the tube plates dont
glow as much.
Seeing I have plenty of power up my sleeve I turned up the variac in the
hope of getting longer sparks but found that I'm getting flashovers to the
primary and grid coil. I assume this is because of the tighter coupling. I'm
thinking of winding a flat primary to overcome this problem but then where
would the grid coil be placed. Has anyone had experience with flat primarys
on tube coils and do they work just as well.
Help and advice is welcomed.
Claude.
