If the "tubes" that you refer to are the ivory coloured plastic parts,
then they are the parts which hold the primary supports in position, as
well as fixing the support for the secondary. They are shaped as they
are so that they can also allow the primary supports to be adjusted
downwards.
The shape means that you can adjust the coupling without touching the
(heavy) secondary, and also get to the beneath of the primary, for
tuning purposes.
