Tim, Because my shed is only 3M (9.8ft) by 6M (19.7ft) I normally run my
small Magnifier (hence small magnifier) on low power due to space
restraints.
This being 4.5KV into a .056uF MMC, with this I get 80cm (32 inches) from a
56cm torriod, the cap bang size 1.1 Joules.
With this I measure 4.5A from the 240V 50Hz supply with no power factor
correction, from calculations from the transformer V out and cap value the
real power would be about 380VA?
If I reduce my current limiting the measured current draw goes up to 8A (no
PFC) but the output arcs then exceed 1M (40 inches),
To crank it up further I use my 4 MOT transformers which put out 8.5KV, add
another torriod of 69cm diameter and 2 more turns on the primary. The sparks
then arc to the extremities of the shed which causes all sorts of problems
so its hard to measure the length other than I expect its more than 1.5M.
This draws 10A but in reality 1.3KVA would be expected with PFC.
Tonight I set it up outdoors, fired it up to the max to see what it can do
when one of my MOT transformers failed, the failed MOT is now out putting at
60% so I think there may be some shorted turns?
It’s off to the tip recycle shop to purchase another microwave oven for me.
These spark lengths may be able to be achieved with a conventional TC at the
same power in but it’s the intensity and ferocity of the sparks I notice to
be stronger, may be more current in them?
Magnifiers really come into play at higher power levels, but I have a lot of
fun with this one.
My tertiary is wound on a 100mm (4inch) pipe, 320mm (12.5 inches) long and
14mH, its looks small with the large torriod on it.
Paul A.
