I think the varnish/polyurethane/etc., is not so much for insulation, as
for mechanical protection and to hold the windings in place. My coil was
wound with ordinary single build magnet wire, and a couple very thin coats
of Krylon clear spray to hold the windings in place (as glue, essentially).
