A little thing called UL 2161 has done just that. Or at least made the 
pre-UL 2161 transformers (UL 506) ineligible to receive a UL approval after 
September 2002. So naturally, all neon transformer manufacturers have had 
to convert to the newer UL standard, which requires secondary ground fault 
protection on all larger transformers. Otherwise, they could not be used in 
a UL listed sign. You can find out much more by doing a search for "UL

I have no doubt that standard magnetic transformers will still be 
manufactured for a long time to come, but there will be no more new US made 
transformers without SGFP. However, there is a possibility that non-US 
manufacturers will make non-SGFP transformers for sale in the US. If I hear 
more on this, I will let the list know.
