Hi James,

Here is a plain wave antenna you can use to pick up signals off a coil:

You can also use about 1 one foot piece of wire that will pick up many 
useful signals from about 8 feet away.  Since the voltages and currents 
used in Tesla coils are far higher than the scope and probes can normally 
take, direct connections are not recommended unless you really know how to 
do it.  In general you would need current monitors like Pearson makes, very 
special high voltage probes like Tektronix makes, or fiber optically 
coupled probes.
