I have spent the last two days reading virtually every post on water
capacitors... Here's a summary of what I understood:

1) Everybody tries to prove that their view is correct and are not
willing
to experiment
2) Everybody who is willing to experiment is put down by those who feel
that they are saying the ultimate truth
3) They will work
4) They won't work <--that's a big one
5) They are too good to be true

Sorry for the harsh attitude...*takes deep breath* Okay, the reason that
I
am so frustrated is that I feel that those who want to should be
encouraged
instead of being told its an impossibility...anywho, I am going to
attempt
building a water cap using distilled water run through an industrial
De-Ionizer... For the actual plates I am going to take an antenna tuning
capacitor of about 200pf in the air at about 1kv and take it apart. I
will
give each plate a good coating of acrylic to avoid the contamination
that
everybody is talking about. I will rebuild it carefully in order to make
sure that i do not scratch my acrylic coating, For the containment box I
am
building is out of .5" thick acrylic (I know its overkill but that's
beside
the point). Its dimensions are 4"x4"x12" to give the vari-cap .5"
clearance
off each side. The cap will be supported by .25" thick acrylic sheet
inside
the case. The tuning knob will come out of a hole bored to the right
size
of the shaft with Teflon tape to give it a good seal. If anybody thinks
this is a bad idea please give me advice but keep in mind that even if I
am
told that its all going to blow up in my face (which it might if it
overheats), I am still insisting on building it. It can't hurt...it'll
make
others safe by keeping me busy."

Contamination of the water takes time, so I'd suggest you first try
putting that capacitor into a bucket of water and see how it behaves
immediately. As for the acrylic, it will puncture immediately so skip
it for now. Save yourself a lot of work and, if all looks well,
continue with your plans. If it doesn't find out why before going to
all of that effort.
