Several times I have seen Penta Laboratories mentioned on the TCML as a
source for 833A sockets, yet no tube sockets of any kind seem to be listed
on their website. When I called them about two years ago, they claimed never
to have carried 833A sockets.

Are these a special-order item?

You state that the sockets "are pretty good". Did you purchase a pair from
Penta Labs? How long did it take to actually get the sockets? Do you know
where they are made? Russia? China?

Some of the cheap imported copies of the big Johnson transmitting tube
sockets are so poorly made that they are worthless. Some I have seen used
material for the contact fingers that was so soft that the fingers were
permanently deformed the first time a tube was inserted. Others were lacking
the detent notch in the contact fingers that locks the tube into the socket.
A slight bump and the fingers would suddenly cam the tube out of engagement
with the fingers and then slam the tube's indexing pin against the stop in
the metal sleeve in the socket.
