RE: 833a Sockets

The original technical term was thermionic valve as the original "tubes"
operated by controlling thermionic emission of electrons by a heated
cathode, not to be confused with cold cathode "tubes." There were some
metal cased (Solitrons?)cold devices that came about the time of the first
transistors but were not cost effective and are now forgotten.

It's actually a more technical description of the job they do, namely
controlling a ("conventional") current flow from anode to cathode.
"Tube" sounds more like a nickname to me. I prefer "bottle".
