When I was working on the 4 kv transformer contest, I had poor results with 
my rotary gap.  It has four gaps that it has to fire through, all set to 
about .010" to .015".  I did get 9" discharges but it would not fire 
reliably.  Going back to a static gap set to about .050", I got 10.75" 
discharges.
