has explored this to any degree.

I suspect not, although Antonio is probably more qualified than any of
us to figure out the effect of a transverse magnetic field. I believe
that Richard Hull would have useful opinions but I don't think he is
active here any more. It's easy enough to calculate the force on the
plasma for a given field strength and current, but to turn that into
quenching is quite another matter. There was an article in the AWA
Review a few years ago discussing the use of magnetic fields in the old
high-power arc transmitters, but not in the context of extinguishing the
conduction.
