I missed this one when earlier. I used to renovate old scientific equipment,
and for getting a good polish on copper there is little to beat jeweller's
rouge (cerium oxide). The method I used was to dissolve pure soap (that is
soap with no additives) in ethanol. Shave the soap finely and soak it in
ethanol overnight. Filter the resulting solution which should be syrupy
(this is very slow). Take about 25ml (1fluid ounce) mix the rouge in a
little at a time till you get a thick paste. Use this to polish the copper,
I suggest you wear latex gloves during this and any follow up treatment.
Finally rinse in distilled or de-ionised water and dry without using heat.
Jeweller's rouge can be obtained from hobby shops where they sell it for
stone polishing. Remember this is a polish it will not remove deep scores or
blemishes.
