No. If you look at Terry's experiment testing an NST with each type
of connection it is obvious that connecting the gap across the
transformer terminals is exposing the transformer to the least
electrical stress. The spikes can be taken care of by a simple filter.
There should be no visible or substantial electrical difference to
coil operation.
