How big or small of a coil do you want? Or more important, what size
transformer will power it, what is it's rated voltage/current?
JavaTC http://www.classictesla.com/java/javatc.html can help you work
out a design of your own, or you could build a coil the same as an
existing coil, I believe Dr R has some plans...

Irrelevant.  Nobody would be silly enough to expect
L = u Nsqrd Area/ Length to apply to an air cored solenoid.
