Why not try changing the aspect ratio? it's fairly simple to use the same length of wire and change the aspect ratio.....then the DC resistance is constant. It's simple to find the point at which the inductance is at a max. It's even easy to determine, with a given topload the aspect ratio that causes the LC frequency to be equal to the quarter wave frequency....which might wind up being the best configuration of a coil.
