Re: exploding wire

Jim,

Terry is quite correct. For shrinking coins or exploding wires
it requires multiple kilo-joule discharges to do it reliably and
this can present some serious dangers to an unwary experi-
menter, both from an electrical and a mechanical perspective.
Anyone contemplating taking on a quarter shrinker/exploding
wire/water arc explosion/rail gun project(s)or any project
requiring large capacitor discharges should read the safety
section of Bert Hickman's website BEFORE starting!

Hi,
Caps like we were using yesterday are 60uF at 10kV for 3000 Joules each. They probably weigh a 100+ pounds. CD caps are 2000V at 0.15uF at "0.3 joules each". You see the problem :-) The big caps store 10,000 times the energy!!
Cheers,
        Terry

Hello All,

Slightly off topic, but has anyone used the cd .15uf caps in banks to explode wire? If so, what voltage seemed the most success, bank configuration, and damage to our great capacitors was sustained. Terry, you may be able to field this the best if you are willing to post it. I know Bert H uses mammoth caps. Are these sizes required? Please reply off list if this too far off topic.

Thanks for all you do,
