Re: Building the right capacitor

Hi Drake and Kyle,
A tank capacitor for an NST of 15KV @ 120mA will need to be around 0.04uF.
You can make a 0.0409uF cap by building an MMC (Multi-Mini Polypropylene
Capacitors), made of thirty-three 0.15uF 2000 VDC Cornell Dubilier caps,
Part Number 942C20P15K-F. You can purchase them from Eilene at Richardson
Electronics, phone number 1-888-735-7358. If you try to order them from
their Web site, you have to purchase a minimum quantity; not so if you call
directly. The cost per cap is $3.22. You will also need thirty-three 10
meg ohm 1/2 watt resistors for safety, since your current rating is so high.
To make an MMC tank capacitor you need 3 strings of 11 caps each, wired in
series with a resistor in parallel across each cap. When you make your
strings, make sure that you leave 2/10 inch physical spacing between each
cap. I didn't do that and I had to jam 0.30" plastic sheeting between each
cap to increase the insulation factor. I made a two string 0.03uF MMC for
my 15KV @ 90mA transformer array. You can use my layout as an example and
then simply add a third string in parallel for a total of 0.04uF. My Tesla
coil page address is: http://www.halice.com/physics/tesla-1.html. There is
a schematic of my Tesla coil toward the top of the page that shows how the
two strings of my MMC are wired and a few pictures of the layout down the
page. If you have any questions, please feel free to email me at
2halice@xxxxxxxx
FYI, I plan on firing the Tesla coil on my Web page in 2 weeks. I've got to
make the NST protection filter, finish a couple of toroids and finish
putting the baffles in my secondary coil.
