They were used in a primordial radio altimeter that worked at the
astoundingly high frequency of 450 MHz (erm... Mc/Sec).

   Somewhere around here I have the remains of a radiosonde I found 
on the desert which has a tube which looks like a 958A but no label 
(or much else left) when I found it.  Also have one with a 3A4 and 
others with 5703's and the RCA cavity oscillators.  Wonder if anyone 
has ever compiled a history of radiosonde development?

   Wasn't the "acorn tube" altimeter the APN-1?  The APX-6 IFF 
transponder I have uses a 2C44 (not the more common 2C43) lghthouse 
tube in the output stage but I'd have to look at it again to see 
what's used in the receiver.
