Thanks to everyone for their comments - very 
helpful. I didn't know about saturation. It seems 
that Neon Sign Transformers are are the best choice.

My next question is about electronic equipement 
nearby - is there a risk that I would fry my 
computer in the next room with a Tesla coil?
