Hey Chip...
learning is tough... it took me some time too.
well both of the drawings are not correct as far as what is needed to
ballast a piggie.
I'll try to explain this in words ( my worst attribute) but here it goes
lets say you are using 240VAC to drive the piggie, both legs are hot
with 120VAC and at opposed phases ( 120 up and 120 down there fore 240VAC)
lets call hot leg 120 up line 1 and hot leg 120 down line 2 ( for
that instantanious moment of the 60 Hz phase at peak )
if you are using a variac system this makes things a bit different
but lets consider you dont have the variacs ( as of yet ;) )
Line 1 will lead into the one side of the buzz box primary coil (
lets call that BB1) from there the other primary buzz box primary (
BB2) goes to the PI1 ( piggie input1)
Line 2 will lead into the piggie input ( call that PI2)
directly enuf words a picture is worth a thousand word....
hmmmm I'll re-do your original drawing and send it to you directly
via your emial... ( drawing B is how I have my system set up )
I've added a safety gap and changed the position of the cap... I
prefer the cap to be in series with the primary coil and the rotary
gap paralell to the transformer's secondary side.... this way if the
voltage gets too high, the safety gap will fire, protecting the cap
from over voltage...
if the rotory gap is "tuned" to the 60Hz cycle ( SRSG) , you should
get peak voltage in the cap when the spark gap fires ( this pretty
much requires a SRSG to do this) but that is a new subject to be learned...
:) and you thought this would be easy ;)~~
Take your time read read read learn and learn some more... ask a
thousand questions and get 3 thousand answers
making a million volts isnt easy ( it isn't that difficult but it is
worth while seeing 9+ foot streamers arcing off your toroid :) )

OK. First, let me say this. I know I am ignorant of alot of thing

I am trying to learn something here. There is a wealth of knowledge
and experience here that money can't buy. Not that I could afford it
if you could...OK..enough of that...
I have attached a pic of (2) schematics representing (2) approaches
to a TC curcuit with a ballast in it. By the way. I draw in Autocad
for a living. Please let me know which one. Drawing "A", or Drawing
"B", best represents the proper intruduction of a ballast into the
curcuit. Or if neither is a good example. Also let me know if you
see any other mistakes. Thank you...Chip
