Re: ballest choice?

Hi Scott,

Interesting question. I'm not a MOT user (built a 2 MOT tranny but never a big one). The back of my brain was always kind of wondering "how does one really know" with a shorted MOT secondary as a ballast. Well, the obvious approach is to ask how much power you are running with the ballast? You could always go to a welder, but maybe also you could parallel a couple MOT's configured for ballasting to double the current. Just off the whim thought (take it with a grain of salt). It will be interesting for me to see what others say and have done.

Take care,
Bart

Hello all,
I have a quandary, I am using a shorted MOT as ballast for my 6 and 4 MOT stacks, for my TC. I don't think I am getting the performance I should, and I think the ballast is the culpret. What other options do I have, and If I make a ballast, how do I determine the "optimum" inductance (I am limited on tools, so I don't have a tool to measure inductance). I don't have a variac, so It will need to withstand full power (120V 15-25A).
Thanks a lot.
Scott Bogard.
