When you initially "tune" a Tesla coil you have to move your pri tap along the copper tuning to tune it. With Litz wire this would be impossible unless you dipped the Litz wire into a solder pot every 6 inches forming a bare spot to allow for the tuning. In short, a real mess. A pri with all those solder globs would look horrible --- probably work --- but look horrible.
Copper tubing presents a much more sane approach. Like Dave R. said in a recent email, you can smelt your own steel and copper to make your own transformers, but what's the point? Unless one has infinite time to waste this is an exercise in futility.
Copper tubing works great to build coils with spark lengths of 20 to 30 feet so no real gain is necessary by using Litz wire.

j [is that your real name?] You say (or others say ?) litz wire can't be tapped. I understand that the function of litz wire is to reduce the skin affect resistance to high frequency current. I am guessing that a solder clumpwhich fuses the bundle of litz wires together at any particular point on thelitz wire will appear as a small resistor in series to high frequencycurrent flowing through the wire. And this current should pass through nonethe worse, except for the calculable resistance effects. So why couldn't/shouldn't it be tapped? Regards, Al Erpel PA, USA, 18901 [snippetty do da]Could be he was. It was an idea that I thought was feasible. I have several hundred lbs litz #3 stranded(Iknow ,,can't be tapped) Perhaps I will go with the 80% Litz,,20% strap. I'm looking for least primary turns possible for a 16"D wound w/#14 magnet for 80 inches secondary. Thanks for all the feedback. j_______________________________________________ Tesla mailing list Tesla@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx http://www.pupman.com/mailman/listinfo/tesla
