Hello,
I have found two identical neon sign transformers, that I am trying to build
a Tesla Coil Around, but I am experiencing some difficulties..... My main
problem is that I can't figure out my transformer output, and my MMC
capacitors keeps blowing.....
The Transformers are from Neoncomp, www.neoncomp.fi, type "N 50/8 RE" and
here is what it says on them regarding the secondary:
Us = 4000 V - E - 4000 V
Is = 50 mA
Pp = 520 VA
On the homepage it is described as a 2 x 4000 V transformer, but does that
means it gives out 8000 V?
I have parallel connected them, and believe that should give a output of
4000 V and 100 mA. Right?
I have used 40 x 0.047 uF 1000 V capacitors, 5 in string, 8 strings
parallel.. This should give me 0,0752 uF, and 5000 V potential, but the
capacitors keep blowing... Any Ideas, thoughts regarding the transformers?

Hi Gryphon,
I believe the 4000 E 4000 means 4000 V each side of ground(E=earth), or 8000
V across the two HV terminals. Your can verify this by applying line
voltage to the hv side and reading the output from the primary. Multiplying this
ratio by the line voltage will give you the RMS output voltage of the
transformer.
But remember, your peak voltage is V x sqrt(2) which @ 4000 V would mean
5657 V peak, and at 8000 V is 11314 V. This could be the source of your trouble.
Your cap string has to withstand the peak voltage.
