Hey James...
When molecules/atoms (gasses work best) are influenced by high voltage
fields, the electrons in those atoms moves outward away from the
proton/nutron mass and into the next level of electron orbit. As the
electrons are moved into the next orbit, they maintain that extra
"power" for a moment. Since the electron doesnt want to be in the next
orbit ( especially when the field is removed or lessened) , it releases
the "power" it had obtained while influenced by the electrical field as
a photon and thus returning to its original orbit. Depending on the
intensity of the field and the material being energized, the electrons
can move outward a couple of orbits, thus resulting in several photon
releases as they find their way back to their original orbit. Since
nitrogen and oxygen are the main components of the air, we see blue,
purple, and white ( usually when current flow is at a maximum, white).
Oxygen is favorable for the blue line emmision and nitrogen favors the
purple and ultraviolet colors.
hope this helped..
