Re: [TCML] comment about new coilers

Hi Miles,

Teaching is certainly about having someone do it themselves and learn from the experience with the guide of the teacher. But, this isn't what all coilers are looking for. Some are here just to get their coil up and running. We are sort of a Tech Support group by nature and with that comes basic evaluation and possible cause.

The coiler has the option to take that information and run with it or find out for themselves if it's correct with their own evaluation. Those that really want to know will seek out further information and measure for their own understanding. Others will opt out. That has always been true and will never change (internet or not, TCML or not). Those that really want to understand "why" will find out for themselves. Nothing you or I say will ever change that.

Take care,
Bart

Gary,

Bart makes the point exactly; this is all backwards, and I find new
coilers often times don't even listen to the answers they get. We should
not be spoon feeding these guys. Teaching science is about safety, and
teaching people how to teach them selves. Did Scott actually learn
anything? Or did someone just tell him what to do. Sorry if I am
splitting at hairs, but a good solid period of confusion, followed by a
minor explosion of some sort, has taught me more about tesla coils than
anything else. The experimental method, for example.

Listen guys, if a coiler has an issue it will usually unfold "after" the

purchase when the coil isn't working. We will all attempt to derive the reason. I personally don't want new coilers to purchase junk TC items (ever). I would rather they ask before they buy, but this is a step completely in the hands of the coiler. As soon as they ask, they will get the info needed.

I personally have not made purchase mistakes in my coiling and the reason why is because I consulted the TCML first. I've been coiling for a while now, but I still am green on many things. Should I purchase something (even after several years of coiling) which I feel I don't have a good handle on, I will consult the TCML first. Experience or time

with coiling is certainly valuable, but none of us knows everything. This is just one major reason why the TCML is so valuable.

Take care,
Bart

Hi Miles,

I don't get your point. I don't think there's a one among us, myself
included, who early in our coiling experience, hasn't spent money on
something that ultimately proved to be useless for coiling. How is it
we're making it too easy? There's no doubt that Scott has learned about
what kind of NST to use. I believe that the replies to his post have
included scientific explanations as to why the current NST is
unsuitable. Teaching science is what this list is all about!

I had this kind of problem a lot with new coilers on e-bay. They
thought
they were so smart to buy solid state neon sign drivers instead of
usable non GFI NSTs. Somehow, as a community, we are making this too
easy. New coilers especially those who do not listen, will make
mistakes
just like everyone else. Let them mess things up for awhile, and
*learn*, just like the rest of us do. Isn't teaching science
important
anymore?
