Did a bit more digging.  Seems current thinking is that _maybe_
XRays have been detected from lightning stokes.
  (Good web search exercise.)

In any case, being at a decent/safe distance will allow
square law attenuation and atmospheric absorption to
cut the xrays.

As a separate matter, there is some recent speculation that
_initiation_ of discharge may (emphasis on may) be triggered by
Cosmic rays. 

My reading is that the _length_ of the lightning channel is due
to its being 'stepped' out: visible in high speed photos:
 an initial 'short stroke' stays conductive long enough to
 get extended by a second dump of charge, etc.

Same same method on Tesla coil streamers.
