How about if you approach them with the notion that you are in the "scrap  
metal business" and would like to "recycle" the materials, rather than making  
them think that you want a functional tranny. Ask to buy some dead pigs  cheap 
that you can actually build a good one from, and then go sell the leftover  
steel and copper to recoup your money. 

Or, that your local "club or organization" is keen on "green" projects and  
into recycling and happened to notice all those big metal cans full of steel 
and  copper, and would they please donate some to a worthy cause?

This is of course even more disgusting of a policy. Most large  companies
