RE: [TCML] Not an Oudin coil (was: Re: Single ear piglet)

Hi Aaron,

My sentiments as well; however, I am making my next coil to that spec as
many do including many pros. Merely getting hit by a power arc streamer at
10KVA power level would likely kill, or maim badly, yes? I suppose you could
look at this as assuming the gun is always loaded and therefore must be
handled under that assumption.

Jim Mora

Post Script:

Even Adam's most excellent front end protection would be null and void if he
ever connected to a "backend" streamer.

Myself, I want to be a long way away from the top terminal and have multiple
safeties at my control cabinet such as an obvious breaker box, x-ray
connectors, mushroom switches, a keyswitch with removeable key, and a
deadman switch monofilament line clip lead in the "A" relay series circuit-
both will travel out with me.

Perhaps this makes being in a Faraday cage safer? Just curious... Also
perhaps at these power levels a strike rail is a false sense of security
after watching Dr. Resonance's coil running at about 240V/>100amps with a
"smallish" topload (big bruiser was ill that year). I don't know if he RF
grounds the inner primary; but I think he does as I was there when it was
crimped. It was quite a show for awhile anyway! Then again his oxy/hydrogen
cannon was no small toy either ;-^ Non of this is recommended to our newer
viewers!!! ***DO NOT*** start out with a pole pig! Getting bit by an OBIT is
a painful but mostly a survivable experience. The big iron leaves few cooked
survivors, sans limbs, and they seem to be easier to obtain these days in
the states anyway. End rant.

An Oudin coil is an autotransformer, yes? Definitely not what you're doing,
David. An Oudin coil with a one-eared pole pig for a primary source would
certainly be far, far greater *guaranteed* danger than a similar Tesla coil
with a primary/secondary arrangement. An Oudin coil with a one-eared pig
means that you're standing on one leg of the primary HV and the other is
wired directly to the streamer that's about to hit you. With a Tesla coil,
the concern for 50/60Hz on the streamers is generally tied to the concern
that a coincidental primary-to-secondary flashover occurs, setting up a
transient Oudin-coil-like scenario. Still not something to scoff at, but
you do have to get [un]lucky.
