RE: [TCML] interesting spark gap idea, lets work together
Hello Yurtle, and esteemed Group,
What precautions , if any, where in your gap motor inverter for hash? Or are
all methods futile? I am in the process of building a HP 10" coil with a 17"
rotary and 3/8 W electrodes. I want to use an AC motor. This will be in
series with a well deigned and blown 5 gap .25" W gap set ( a modified
suggestion from Richard Quick some time ago). I would hate to loose my well
integrated speed control (inverter) in a run. Maybe the group can make some
suggestions or brain storm this lingering bummer?
Otherwise, I am going to use my 1hp DC motor and control it with a variac
and a heavily rectified AC from my control cabinet as suggested by Steve
Young awhile ago.
Thanks Much,
Jim Mora
Production VFD's are expensive!

Actually, I use my current gap at around 10 kVA on my 10" coil, as I've
already blown up two VFDs and only have one left.

As you see, I had a vacuum gap in series with my three phase vfd rsg, as I
found I got my best performance with this. I was actually running my motor
as high as 150 Hz, with a series vacuum gap on a variac, to find the best
combination.
These photos are really old, as I now have a .1 nF cap and have raised my
top topload as high as my 8' garage door will allow.
After blowing my second vfd, I chose to build a shop vac gap, as a quick
fix, and haven't been too disappointed. It may have lost a foot or so, but
when you already have more than you need (or the neighbors can stand)...
