And this is used in HV measuring equipment.. send polarized light through an appropriate crystal with the conductor next to it, and the amount of rotation is proportional to current.

Or, in fast shutters. Crossed polarizers, coil around crystal, etc.

The Faraday cage is more an example of Gauss's law.
